Multi-woodwind instrumentalist, Bryan Covey, grew up
in Windsor, Ontario. The son of bassist Art Covey,
Bryan was exposed to a wide variety of music in the
home and was heavily influenced by omnipresent
Detroit radio stations. At age 12, Bryan took up
flute and saxophone in his school music program and
studied privately with Windsor saxophone icon, Gill
Grossutti. In his high school years, Bryan was a
member of the International Youth Symphony, had his
own jazz band and was “sitting-in” regularly with
Detroit area jazz musicians in local jazz clubs.
After high school, Bryan moved with his family to
London, where, after the odd sabbatical year or two,
Bryan finally graduated from the University of
Western Ontario with a B.A. in music education and
an Artist Diploma in performance. While at Western,
Bryan studied flute with Anne Thompson, was
principle flute for the UWO Symphony Orchestra and
played saxophone in the UWO Jazz Ensemble. Bryan
also holds an Ontario Teacher's Certificate and has
taught in schools in Toronto and England. He
currently teaches at Mohawk College and privately,
in his home studio, in Norwich.
Bryan has performed with: Orchestra London, the
Grand Theatre, Joan Rivers, Mickey Rooney, Frankie
Vally, Celebrity Cruises, and Italian, Klezmer,
Celtic, jazz, rock, top 40, country, and blues
bands. As a member of the Light of East Ensemble,
Bryan has been able to fulfill another of his
dreams; learning and performing eastern
Mediterranean music. Bryan embraces the
interconnectedness and emotional expression that
comes with music; the Light of East Ensemble
embodies it all.
